Adjusting expectations

I've been casting my eye over a series of posts on the Girltalk blog about dealing with stressful/hormonal times as a Christian.

I liked the point made in this post about finding a new normal. Adjusting expectations can definitely make life easier when things are out of kilter for whatever reason, and it helps develop a spirit of humility! Saying "actually, I can't do it all, or even cover what I consider to be the basics, at the moment" is a healthy challenge to my ego.

My whole career at the moment is all about not being able to cope with the basics. We have to do all this extra stuff. At the moment, we're in the season of Lent and at my school, that means FUND-RAISING in a big way.So every homeroom has to raise money for charity, and it's not just a case of bring in a dollar or two each and we're OK.We have to do better than that! I have a lovely Year 8 homeroom class, and tomorrow lunchtime, we'll be selling hot chips to the school community. This has meant a lot of organising on my part.I've organised the kids to give me a dollar or two each to start with, then I had to make arrangements to use the cooking room in my spare period before lunch and buy all the ingredients.Today, I went to Macdonald's to ask for a donation of 60 paper boxes to put the hot chips in(after a consultation with another lady about what to put them in.)The guy I spoke to said that he'd have to ask someone else ( who wouldn't be available till later)if it was OK, and mentally I wrote him off. I asked if he could give me 10 boxes and he said yes.I was standing there, wondering where I'd get the other 50 boxes from, when he came out again with a bag of 60 boxes. I was VERY HAPPY!

I keep on thinking about school teaching in the OLD DAYS.It really was so much easier.

Why do you have to fundraise for Lent? Is it something to do with focusing on helping others instead of yourself? This teaching gig seems like more than full time if you ask me - they expect a lot. You sound very organised - hope it goes well!

We have to do fundraising in Lent because we're supposed to be focussing on the less fortunate, and raising money for charity. Our chip-making exercise went very well, thank you, but it was a big effort. My class pulled together very well, and this pleased me a lot.
