Communicating with your Terrific Toddler, Even When It’s Hard
-
Those sweet months of snuggling your tiny helpless baby in your arms went
by in a flash, didn’t they? Now you have a spirited little person who is
moving...

Serial Killer
Q: What do you NOT want to find in your carport after a nice breakfast out?
A: The mangled body of a guinea pig - minus its head.
You may remember from back here that our cats have a bit of a track record in this department, This morning's find was truly gross - and strange. The body was sort of squashed into a hole in the wall, looked like someone had stashed it there for future use. I don't think it got there itself (what with the missing head and all) but it does seem a little out of character for our cats.
Obviously they are the main suspects though. I feel bad for the guinea pig - and I wish whoever owned them would start protecting them a bit more - it's not that hard to secure a cage so a cat can't get in.

Silly Me
I should have known gardening with a toddler and two big dogs on the loose was a bad idea.
I dug a hole - Saffy joined in. I put the plant in the hole - she kept digging. In the same spot! So the poor plant got a bit squashed. And I had to heave her out of the flowerbed - she was very reluctant to move!
While this was going on, Hamish pulled a whole lot of little baby green tomatoes off the plant. Then he sat there biting into them, in between laughing at my attempts to move Saf.
I did get all the plants into the ground eventually, but not without a lot of huffing and puffing and telling the dog to bugger off...

A Crime Has Been Committed
Oh dear - this is really quite bad.
Guess what I found in the carport this afternoon?
A quite large, and quite dead, guinea-pig.
Not sure if one of our cats killed it, or just found it and dragged it home, but it's not good either way.
I had to put it in the bin, it made me want to cry. I hate the way dead animals feel. Poor thing - not a pleasant way to go.

Update on Ruby
Ruby is home from the vet now - seems to be better but tired. The vet wasn't sure in the end what the problem was, but painkillers and rest fixed her up.
He was leaning towards her having received a blow to the side - not sure how that would have happened unless Saffy landed on her or something, which, let's face it - isn't exactly beyond the realms of possibility!

Sick Ruby
Ruby the dog is at the vet's tonight. We had to rush her there at lunch time - I heard her throw up a few times, and called her in to see if she was ok - she was shaking a lot and couldn't walk properly.
So I called Adam home from work and we rushed around to the vets. They thought it could be a tick, or some sort of blow to the side that was causing trembling etc because of the level of pain. They weren't really sure, but have given her pain relief and valium, and will monitor her overnight.
She looked terrible, it was very upsetting to see her in so much distress. I'm glad I was home and able to notice it straight away - it seemed to hit her quite suddenly.
I hope she improves overnight.

Sweet
We usually let the dogs inside after dinner, and Ruby spends the evening lying at my feet.
On Wednesdays however I'm out at bible study, and Adam tells me that Ruby plants herself right outside Hamish's bedroom door instead! We're not sure whether she thinks she has to look after him when I'm not here or whether she thinks I'm in the room and she's waiting for me to emerge, but either way, it's sweet of her.

My Dog is a Doofus
Saffy has a bone in her kennel (a prized possession that she guards very enthusiastically). I'm at my desk inside, with a closed door in between us.
She wants to come in, and waits at the door, but whenever I get up to let her in, she rushes off at great speed to the kennel, lest I or Ruby steal her bone!
I'm leaving the door open so she can make up her mind in her own time....now she's just tried to bring the bone inside - I don't think so!!!! She knows she's not allowed, so as soon as she sees me she slinks back off to the kennel. Poor thing - she's so conflicted lol.

Jingle Bells
In line with council directions, we have put bells on our cats' collars.
They sound like sleigh bells. I am constantly expecting to see Santa rounding the bend. Not sure how long they will last...especially as they don't stop when the sun goes down.
In other pet news, Minnie is having "Chicken and Seafood Medley in a Tuna Jus" for lunch today. What am I having? A boring tinned salmon sandwich.
Cat -1, Me - 0.

Big wheels
Adam sold the motorbike and got a new car...or should I say, a new monster truck!
Minnie has already adopted it as her preferred sleep spot.

...And The Ugly!

Yesterday, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a burly council officer, who said:
"A complaint has been lodged against your cats!"
I said:
"The cats?!?"
I would have thought any complaint would be about the dogs barking and terrorising locals passing by our fence, but no - apparently one of the cats has killed a neighbour's guinea pig.
As we discussed this horrendous crime, Oscar sunned himself on the porch, looking every inch a relaxed moggie who wouldn't hurt a fly. It was a wonderful performance.
The council man asked us to put bells on the cats, and to register them with the council. There's nothing in the legislation that allows them to charge us with an offence for a cat attack, so technically the cats get off scot-free.
Poor guinea pig though :(

Ecosystem
I've got a whole little ecosystem happening in my laundry.
First, there's the rabbit. We've had him for a couple of years and he freeranges in the laundry. He eats pellets and seeds.
Lately, to my utter disgust, pantry moths have moved into the laundry, feeding on the pellet mix. I can't stand them, mainly because they breed prolifically and are quite hard to get rid of. And they get into all the food and ruin it. I've resorted to squashing every one I see - generally I don't kill bugs around the house, and I find myself wincing and saying "sorry" every time I get one, but it has to be done. It feels like groundhog day - I squash probably 10 - 20 a day, and there's just as many (if not more!) back the next time I go in there!
We've also got a moth trap in there which is a bit macabre - the moths get stuck to it and die a slow death. If you look at it, they appear dead, but if you pick it up they all start moving and you realise they are actually alive and can't escape! I feel sorry for them - so I squash them. Hmmm.
And lastly, frogs have moved in!! No idea how they actually make it into the room, but we suspect they come up the drainpipe. We found two in there over the weekend - probably trying to get out of the heat, and perhaps they eat the moths (I hope so anyway!). We put them outside when we found them, but now they know there's this moth feast waiting for them, they may be back!

So against the rules
I keep noticing that Saffy is being particularly quiet.

Where is that dog? I wonder.
I look into the back room - and there she is. On the LOUNGE!
So, so illegal.
